sizzle and Survive!!! Part Two - 6/15/09

To top off the sizzling hot Friday, we had a dance that was a ton of fun! Not only was it fun for the ambassadors, but also for the staff. We had a ton of fun dancing and being carefree for a few hours. I loved it!! and the students seemed to as well.
Saturday was a very busy day. After breakfast, we had another short module and then lined up to go get the big group picture made. Then we split them up into service project groups. They had different groups for their service projects in order to meet new people and learn how to adapt and work with other people. This was a second year with this service project. This project is a city beautification project. We have been painting murals that hang around Lexington in some of the lower income and not so beautiful to the outside world parts of town. Last year all of the murals hung on the side of one building and this year they will be spread around a district of town. Before we got to actually working on the service projects, we went to the Lexington Children's Theatre for an art panel and some history on what Juneteenth is. We were also painting flags to be used in the celebration. After the panel, we walked to a local high school and had lunch and then we went outside and planned and painted the murals and flags. :D My group wanted to go with the whole America as a melting pot theme. So they drew a huge pot and going into it they had a bunch of symbols that represented different cultures and people groups. It turned out really neat!! There was some great designs by all of the groups. :D While we were painting murals, my partner Jared, had to leave because he his mom had surgery and was having some problems. So for the rest of the weekend, I was in charge with my entire group. I had to break the news to my original group that Jared wouldn't be back that night, I was able to tell them that He might be back the next day, over dinner. That night we had Tribal games. Going into it, my group was in 7th place out of 18 :D They were excited. It was fun to see them compete and have fun. They had a lot of different activities to compete in. My favorite activity that they had to do was when they had to make up words using the music to children's songs. They had to use the name of the team in the words and they had to perform it and be really creative. :D Our teams name was Kauai King. My group did really well. The last activity was a huge jeopardy game all about different HOBY things, history, staff, and the speakers from our seminar. The good news, My team finished in 7th place! along with 11 other teams haha...we tied at a grand total of 0 points, but it was still a ton of fun!
Sunday morning came really soon!! I was sad to see it come. The students in my group were too. We had our last group time together and then we had some final reflections of the weekend with the whole group. After that we went to the nice auditorium for closing ceremonies, here David DiMuzio sang and juggled. It was awesome!! It was a great and tiring weekend :D I loved it and can't wait to go back next year.
