After going to church, college class, and free lunch this morning, I came back to my room to take a nap and then do some homework. When I pulled my phone out to turn it on I saw that I had missed four phone calls, had a voice mail, and several text messages from my younger sister. This was weird and made me worry that something was wrong at home, so I immediately called my sister. She answered the phone crying hysterically. I asked what was wrong and she told me that her dog Spegal had been hit by a car. Immediately I joined her tears.
...My family has had Spegal for about 12 years now. He was a stray that came to our neighborhood and slowly moved his way into our hearts. Ever since he has been a staple figure in our family.
Spegal, was a neighborhood dog for awhile. He was really nervous dog and at first wouldn't come up to anyone, that was soon to change. Back then my dad worked third shift and when he would come home, Spegal would be in the driveway to greet him and dad was always sure to give him some of the scraps from his lunch. As Spegs continued to be around, my parents decided that it was time to give him a bath, so they let him into the house to give him a bath. Then it was outside on the porch where he had begun sleeping in my cats bed. As the weather grew colder, my parents decided to let him into our garage. Before long he was allowed to come sit on the rug in our kitchen and from there he continually made it further and further into our house and hearts. After that he had begun sleeping with us and everyone knew who he was around our neighborhood and in our family. This all lead him to the staple in our family that he was today...
While on the phone with my sister, she told me that our neighbor had come by to pick up some tools that he had let my dad borrow. When Spegs saw him pulling into the drive way he ran up to meet him and my neighbor in his truck couldn't see him and ran over him before anyone was able to say stop. My dad drove him to meet our vet, where she determined that he had a broken leg, hip, and internal bleeding so they put him to sleep. It was so sad.
It is going to be weird going home in a few weeks and not having precious old Spegal come up to me and greet me in his old doggie way :-( I wish I could be home right now. This is really hard on my sister who is so attached to that dog and I know it is rough on my parents too. I miss him already and I am sure the fullness hasn't even hit me since I am not there.
